STORY By Kim Wadsworth, fashion and beauty editor
Years ago, brides only opted for day of makeup and hair; a day before mani-pedi; and if they remembered, a quick razor shave of their legs and underarms the morning of the wedding. Today, thanks to paparazzi-style professional photos and video on the wedding day, brides are leaving no room for beauty error and going to new lengths to look forever beautiful. I decided to experience several beauty protocols to understand what’s involved in getting ready for the big day.
Get Your GLO On
Never fond of my teeth color, I asked bride-to-be Jennifer Clauss, a dental hygienist at Dr. Christopher King in Virginia Beach, how she had such sparkly white teeth. “While whitening strips are good for touch ups, there’s nothing like getting a high dose of a bleaching product called GLO.” In the chair I jumped to get a taste of the GLO Science Professional Procedure which promises whiter teeth with one 32 minute in-office session ($249.) Jennifer thoroughly cleaned and buffed my teeth; then applied the 30% bleach solution. I bit into a heat-plus-light closed mouthpiece and waited while the “blue light” did it’s magic in several administered intervals. The result: my teeth were easily 4-5 shades whiter and with intermittent whitening strip use, I can keep it up. For an additional $199. there’s a GLO Take-Home Whitening Device with ten 10% bleach vials for touch ups; or a box of ten Professional Strips for $40. implantkingdds.com

I have always been all about skin protocols, facials and certain injectibles. At Kaado MD Aesthetics and Anti-Aging in Virginia Beach, Dr. Kaado takes it all to a new level. Using flowers and herbs foraged from the northern part of Lebanon, he’s created a Mediterranean Facial using the eponymous products formulated in house to hydrate and tighten the skin. Layering them step by step, he gave my weary moisture-bereft skin a fresh look that was not only rejuvenated but reflected a much-needed glow. “We suggest starting a skin regimen for brides at least 3 months prior to the wedding and stepping it up the final month.” Other procedures include MesoBotox to reduce sweat while smoothing and tightening the skin; as well as MicroNeedling, where your own blood and plasm are spun and injected into problem areas like acne scars to minimize pitting and rejuvenate the skin. Dr. Kaado welcomes grooms to experience the “Brotox” boost and other protocols to get them aisle-ready as well. kaadomd.com
Stripped Down Bare
I’m always intrigued that specialists like Michelle Gentry, esthetician and owner of BareSkin Beautique in Virginia Beach are willing to go places most don’t want to go to remove unwanted facial and body hair. From brows and upper lips; to underarms and bikini/brazilians, she’s a wiz. I see so many brides not shaving close enough for their strapless gown moment; and unprepared to wear a bikini for their St. Bart’s honeymoon. I decided armpits and a brazilian were the two I should experience. I was amazed at the speed, lack of pain and virtually little redness after waxing. Admittingly, I did a “modified brazilian” but I put my finished waxing experience to the test in a bathing suit and felt remarkably “light and hairless.” email@example.com
Just Add Volume
Extensions are the new “must have” for anyone with thin or fine hair; or just needing that extra volume for your wedding day hairstyle. I fell in love with the look of extensions and discovered TEAM Bridal Extensions in Santa Barbara, California. They are the beauty specialists for renown photographer Jose Villa and I loved how they styled brides. Before buying the all-in-one 100% human hair clip-in, I looked at the colors on line. I wasn’t sure which blonde to choose so I ordered two swatches $7. each. Once I found my match, I ordered it ($298.) I curled my hair, parted it in the back ear to ear, clipped and snapped the extension in. I decided to test it out on our models ( page 36 + page 60) wearing my extensions for their editorial shoot. teambridalextensions.com
