As an editor, it’s always fun to visit photography websites in hopes of finding a wedding that has a look that embodies all the elements that make a beautiful pictorial- from the unique venue and the details used to create a mood; to the energy between a bride and groom that captures their joy at finally tying the knot.
Photography team Grant and Deb Perry of Grant & Deb Photographers did just that when they documented the wedding day of Bo and Kara. I was interested in hearing, from behind the camera, what drives a photographer to shoot, non-stop, for eight hours, knowing that they must capture some of the most important images of a couple’s life. Grant and Deb shared their enthusiasm- and expertise- about what it takes to captured the magic of a wedding day.
Kim Wadsworth: You capture weddings in so many venues and beautiful locations. What was it about this wedding that was of special interest?
Grant Perry: From the first time we visited the Oceanaire on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, we were super stoked! Knowing Bo and Kara were a trendy, fashion forward couple, it was easy to see how the hotel decor, with it’s eclectic and chic vibe, would provide the perfect backdrop for their wedding. Immediately we envisioned how to light and capture their First Look portraits in the moody first floor lounge. Bo and Kara work in the hospitality industry and have an amazing network of family and friends. It was no surprise that their plan was to host, not only a gorgeous event, but one that indulged all the senses. It was truly a night ‘off the hook’ and enjoyed by all.
KW: Were there some particular ideas or themes that you enjoyed highlighting?
Deb Perry: Bo and Kara carefully chose their team of vendors to help craft and execute their vision and we were especially excited to find out that Stage Right Lighting would play a big role. From a custom Gobo, to their ceremony, the cocktail lounge and reception, creative lighting carried their theme and set the tone for the entire wedding day. And using smoke for their grand entrance? C’mon… How could we not love that?
KW: What is one of your “Golden Rules” when if comes to guiding couples about getting the most out of their wedding photographer.
DP: From the first moment we sit down with our couple, we’re training them on what needs to happen to achieve their goal of signature Grant & Deb images. It’s important they understand it takes time to capture beautiful imagery of them on their day. So we go out of our way to educate them (and/or their planner) to allow at least 30 minutes of unencumbered “alone” time to capture those images during the day. Allowing time for creativity means not only can we capture how the day looked and felt, but the love between them that they will remember visually for a lifetime.
KW: Is there something that Kara and Bo did that really made you smile as you were capturing the moment?
GP: While we were shooting their signature portraits in the club, Bo reached down and opened a small “duffle bag” with a window in it. Out popped Franklin, their Yorkie, who brought his own sense of style with a tiny black bow-tie. From that point, he stole the camera and our hearts!
KW: How do you get couples to loosen up and feel confident in front of your lens.
DP: Getting our couples happy and laughing is the fundamental key to getting them confident. Grant’s energy mixed with our crazy banter seems to be the magic pill that takes our couples from stiff to relaxed in no time!
